About this place
When an appetite calls for something substantial at lunchtime, chashu wonton noodles laden with hearty toppings prove deeply satisfying. Tucked along a Shintomicho side street, Mendokoro Taisho serves a soy sauce broth that carries a hint of nostalgia alongside a memorable, gently thickened body and robust depth. Straight, slender noodles catch the soup well, complemented right through to the final sip by tender slices of roast pork, silky wontons, thin menma bamboo shoots, and a soft-boiled egg.
Beyond the house soy sauce base, the standard ramen is also served in salt and miso variations, each matched with its own tsukemen dipping style. Those opting for tsukemen can choose the deluxe option loaded with shredded chashu and generous trimmings, or add seasoned spicy scallions to sharpen the flavor profile. Individual bowls can be customized with toppings such as shredded white leek, sea lettuce, and garlic.
The dining room includes counter and table seating, fostering a relaxed atmosphere that works just as well for a quick solo meal. Alongside the busy midday ramen service, evening visits often see patrons sipping beer over bowls of noodles, blending easily into the neighborhood's daily rhythm. Payment is cash only, so carrying small bills and coins is advised.
